Nirmala Sadan Training College for special education is a special college in Muvattupuzha, Kerala, which trains teachers for special education. Founded in 2003, this college is co-educational, and it has been producing professionals who can satisfactorily handle students with learning disabilities. Being an accredited member of the relevant governmental and national education bodies, the college has been granted NCTE – National Council for Teacher Education – affiliation. The college admits only 80 students in each batch, targets full-time programmes and offers a wide spectrum of courses related to different phenomena of special education; hence, it is the only college of its kind in the region. Their teaching can be grouped under learning disabilities and mental retardation to some extent because the college curriculum is comprehensive enough to offer all types of special education. This means it can only admit one hundred students in each of the courses offered, which explains why each of the courses is given personalised attention. There are two B.Ed. Special Education programmes of 30 students each: Learning Disability and Mental Retardation. Further, offered is D.Ed. Special Education in Mental Retardation for 30 students and an M.Ed. Special Education in Mental Retardation with an intake capacity of 10 students, enabling the student to study further in this specialisation.
